Your Questions, Answered

1. Do I need to know how to play?
Some experience is recommended. This is open play, so basic Mahjong knowledge is helpful. Players should be familiar with the flow of the game. But this is also designed so you can gain experience and confidence through practice and repetition of playing more often.

2. Is this a teaching event?

No, this is not an instructional night. Open Play is designed for guests who already have foundational knowledge and some experience with the game. That said, there is always continuous learning and support from fellow players and the host, so you’ll feel encouraged and guided as you play.

3. What should I bring?

Guests are welcome to bring beverages from their favorite Downtown Smyrna spot or from home. We’ll provide the venue, tables, and thoughtfully prepared setup — simply arrive ready to enjoy the experience.

4. Are beginners welcome?

Yes, as long as you have foundational knowledge of the game and can comfortably participate in open play. Everyone is continuously learning, and there is a strong sense of support from fellow players and the host throughout the evening.

5. Why is there a cost for open play?

Because this is a venue-based event, there are costs associated with renting and preparing the space. We’ve created a fun, safe, and welcoming environment for those who may not have the ability to host or rotate homes, allowing everyone to enjoy Mahjong in a consistent, comfortable setting.

6. Do I need to register in advance?

Yes, registration is recommended to secure your seat, as space is limited.

7. If I don’t know how to play, what are my options?

There are many options out there, as Mahjong has become very popular to play. If you do not have a friend or family member that can teach you, we recommend taking one of our Mahjong 101 classes, which are listed on our calendar. These sessions are designed to teach the fundamentals and prepare you to confidently join Open Play Nights.
